One of jazz’s most influential guitarists returns to Cosmopolite. Mike Stern – known from Miles Davis’ iconic comeback band and a career spanning more than four decades – has developed a musical expression that seamlessly blends the improvisational power of jazz with the warmth of blues and the intensity of rock. When he last visited us in 2022, he delivered a performance so full of energy and brilliance that the audience still talks about it. Now he’s back, and we couldn’t imagine a better way to celebrate International Jazz Day than by marking the occasion together with him.
Stern’s musical journey is closely intertwined with the evolution of modern jazz. After his breakthrough with Miles, he quickly became a sought-after voice alongside names like Jaco Pastorius, Michael Brecker, and Billy Cobham. His distinct tone – lyrical, raw, complex, and full of fire – has influenced an entire generation of guitarists. Following a serious accident in 2016 that temporarily robbed him of the ability to play, Stern demonstrated remarkable determination and resilience. His comeback is considered one of the most impressive in the genre, and today he performs with a depth and intensity that feel both renewed and deeply personal.

Joining him on stage is a group of world-class musicians. Drummer Dennis Chambers and bassist Gary Grainger form a hyper-musical, groove-driven core, while saxophonist Bob Franceschini – one of Stern’s closest collaborators over several decades – adds a sonic force that elevates the entire ensemble. And not least: guitarist and vocalist Leni Stern, an artist who stands firmly on her own. Known for her unique blend of jazz, blues, and West African musical traditions, she has released more than 20 albums and established herself as a groundbreaking composer and instrumentalist. Leni adds a soundworld that both reflects and expands Mike Stern’s musical universe – melodically, rhythmically, and emotionally.
